Review:
I kinda see this as a runner-up for last years debut by Atoma with regular member Jari Lindholm n guest musician Oscar Borgenstam. The second regular member is vocalist Sebastien Pierre of the bands Slumber and Fractal Gates.
The sound is mainly following the dreamy sound of the guitar, but i think it is less sci-fi n ambient than Skylight was.
Recommended.

Pryapisme - Hyperblast Super Collider
Album: Hyperblast Super Collider
Country: France
Release date: April 1, 2013
Label: Apathia Records
Genre: Avantgarde Metal, Fusion, Computer Music, Balkan
Existed since: 2000
Review:
Ive tried to wrap my mind around the fusion of the different genres the trio behind Pryapisme has put into their music. The main genres i senses is balkan style, electronica, computer game music, speed/industrial metal and experimental jazz. Usually when artists place so many different genre in their music, the results often tends to be confused n choppy, while here they have managed to get a red line of melodies through the songs, despite all the genres mixed together. It does remind me somewhat of their fellow french fusion artist, Igorrr.

This is a very good runner-up for their debut album, where they continue to develop their own djenty sound. Daniel Tompskins replacer Ashe O'Hara, who joined the band last year, does an excellent job behind the microphone.

Hacride - Back To Where You've Never Been
Album: Back To Where You've Never Been
Country: France
Release date: April 19, 2013
Label: Indie Recordings
Genre: Progressive Death Metal, Progressive Metal, Metalcore, Grunge
Existed since: 2001
Review:
Hacride has made a varied, strong mini album of about 40 mintues for their 4th release.
I would put them in the harder parts of the prog metal scene, like early Pain Of Salvation. There is also metalcore influences in the music.
The melodies in each song have been well developed, and there r some really good choir sections here, w some influence from Alice In Chains.
Recommended.

Review:
Veteran prog rock group Spock's Beard is out with their 11th album. Its a double album where they have put enough time n effort into each song, that they all stand on their own. Musically they draw much inspiration from the 70's mainly english prog scene, while still sounding like neo-prog.
Highly recommended.

With their debut, these fins place themselves in the harder parts of the general progressive metal scene, with influences from bands like Opeth, Tool, Fates Warning n Queensrÿche. Vocalist Sakari Ojanens voice serves the music well. Overall an album filled with rly good melodies n musicianship.

Review:
This is a short album of around 26 minutes. Musically they sounds like a mix between Blotted Science n Shining, with the 3. song resembling It's The End n the 7th Faceless. The title song is more in the quiet fusion jazz soundscape.
All in all a good album, though i think they should focus on finding their own sound, cause the talent is certainly there.

Album: Omega Arcane
Country: Finland
Release date: May 3, 2013
Label: Candlelight Records
Genre: Symphonic Black Metal
Existed since: 1999
Review:
This is an absolute killer album. I could of course compare them to Dimmu Borgir, but there are light years of quality between DBs latest album and this one. Maybe its closer to Death Cult Armageddon.
The symphonic elements are well thought out, n fits the music perfectly. I have yet to find a dull song here, and after 20 spins or so, i still find parts i havent noticed before. My favourite song at the moment is Slumbering Giant, great transition after the excellent guitar solo.
This will certainly be found on several top lists at the end of the year.
Highly Recommended.

Review:
This record is less free jazz influenced than their 2010 release, though there is still some present, mainly in the parts where the saxophone is present. The music is focused in a fusion between death n roll n industrial metal, think SYL. I also get a sense of breakbeat in the sound.

Review:
Most of the music on this album follows Einar Solbergs voice, which he uses to experiment along progressive melody-lines. I think they on this album goes in completely other directions than other prog metal bands ive listened to this year.
Worth mentioning is that the drummer n the bassist has joined Atle Pettersen of Aspera/Beyond Symmetrys new project The Scheen.
High Recommended.

Album: Tales From The Kingdom Of Fife

Review:
The album starts with a short intro, that i usually skips, before the first song 'The Unicorn Invasion Of Dundee', kicks in. It is a really good opener song, that pulls you right into the story. The albums theme is fantasy, so there's no shocker there.
Musically they stay in the general power metal field, with great melodies and musicianship. The album contains some rly good guitar solos. There are some repetative lyrics/musically part that i think drag the overall impression down, but this is still an impressive debut from the englishmen.
The bonus song, Wizards!, sounds like it came out of the last Angra album.
Highly Recommended.

A strong release from the finnish veterans, yet with weak parts in the death metal parts. The power metal aspects on the other hand is splendid, with memorable melodies. The guitar works are also worth mentioning, which at times is virtous.

Really good second album from polish Disperse. They play djenty prog metal ala Textures w strong influence from technical jazz/metal n jazz/rock, with some of the songs in the modern jazz spectre.
Vocalist Rafał Biernacki adds great techniques and manipulations w his voice, n the guitar solos breaks down in orgasmic melotechnics.
Check out the best opener-song on the album, Profane The Ground.

Review:
I dont know if its justifiable to call this metal. There are absolutely many metal elements in the music and some growling, but the softness of the music overall makes it hard to put in that genre, so maybe its easier to just mark it as progressive rock.
Besides from that this is a great album, filled with strong songs, and Ben Harris' excellent voice, filling the music with memorable vocal lines.
Among influences in the music i would certainly add Tool, 'In Times Of Silence' resembles a harder take on Marilyn Manson. Also add some symphonic and electronic elements.
Highly Recommended.

Review:
Thought i put out reviews by two greek bands today =)
First up is veterans Rotting Christ, whos last effort topped my 2010 list. They are back with another quality record, filled w their own sound of dark folk, black metal. Their signature riffs shines through and the female voices sounds like witches swearing out their curses.
Highly Recommended.

Amorphis - Circle
Album: Circle
Country: Finland
Release date: April 19, 2013
Label: Nuclear Blast Records
Genre: Melodic Metal
Existed since: 1990
Review:
Finnish veterans Amorphis is out with a new album, and as usually they dont disappoint. Its an album filled with strong melodies and none of the songs are given less concentration when written or in the production.
In style they truly got their own sound, with Tomi Joutsens unique vocal on top. They got elements from folk and death, added with some progressivity.
Highly Recommended.

Genre: Progressive Metal

Review:
Besides the funny name, this is actually pretty good prog metal. This is the second installment of their 'The Audio Guide To Happiness', part one i havent heard, but from what ive read it should be as good, if not better than this release.
Some of the songs reminds me of Leprous, while others go towards general progressive metal and rock.
Recommended.

Label: Kunsthall Produktionen
Genre: Ambient black metal

Review:
Ice cold, dark ambient meets old school black metal. This release is obscure for more than one reason. All of his albums were released as unofficial demos, except the split eps, all put out on his own label. Das Tor was released as 300 numbered cassettes.
He do have an upcomming split w fellow swiss Nordlicht, that i guess will come out later this year.
Recommended.

Review:
When I first started to listening to this album, I found it a bit boring and uniform. I didnt think they had raised the bar since their last effort, the excellent 'Frame', even though the first video, 'Reason' showed great promise. Now after 20+ listens, the album still grows on me. The musicianship by all members are flawless, the guitar/keyboard solos exciting, and Mark Basile vocal-techniques varied and really just adds that little extra to the music.
As guest musicians they have Russel Allen, vocalist of Symphony X, and Jørn Viggo Lofstad, guitarist in Pagan's Mind.
In music style they are still in the heavier side of progressive power metal, with some leanings towards late 80's/early 90's heavy metal, think Skid Row.
Highly Recommended.

Pomegranate Tiger - Entities
Album: Entities
Country: Canada
Release date: January 31, 2013
Label: Self-release
Genre: Djent, Progressive Metal, Instrumental
Existed since: 2008
Review:
The album starts with an intro that resembles Falla's A Fishermans Song, before entering the metal. Firstly its djenty, technical, clean jazz/metal that comes to mind, with the guitars leading the melodies. Some of the song are to find in the classical specter, and others are heavily influenced by 70's progressive rock.
A strong debut from the canadians, and i guess it wont be long until they get attached to a record label.
Recommended.

Review:
Long time favourite of mine, Intronaut, is out with a new album. In style i see them as Post-Metal meets Prog rock with a dash of jazz. They got a bit of a dirty sound, and the record need more than a few spins to get into, but once it gets familiar, there are no dull moments.
Highly Recommended.

Review:
Its my first meeting with this anodorrian band, and they serve us, with their fourth release, a diverse and complex album. Musically they are located in a fusion between progressive metal and modern death metal, with symphonic and folk elements. I dont think i wanna dwell into all the different bands/composers from whom they draw they influence, but even if u can recognize some obvious bands, like Rachmaninov and Gorod, i think they manage to create a sound of their own.
Highly Recommended
