Amorphis - Circle

Band: Amorphis
Album: Circle
Country: Finland

Release date: April 19, 2013
Genre: Melodic Metal
Existed since: 1990

Finnish veterans Amorphis is out with a new album, and as usually they dont disappoint. Its an album filled with strong melodies and none of the songs are given less concentration when written or in the production.
In style they truly got their own sound, with Tomi Joutsens unique vocal on top. They got elements from folk and death, added with some progressivity.

Highly Recommended.

Country: USA

Release date: March 5, 2013
Label: InsideOut
Genre: Progressive Metal
Existed since: 2008

Besides the funny name, this is actually pretty good prog metal. This is the second installment of their 'The Audio Guide To Happiness', part one i havent heard, but from what ive read it should be as good, if not better than this release.
Some of the songs reminds me of Leprous, while others go towards general progressive metal and rock.

Band: Paysage d'Hiver
Casette: Das Tor
Country: Switzerland

Release date: February 22, 2013
Label: Kunsthall Produktionen
Genre: Ambient black metal
Existed since: 1997

Ice cold, dark ambient meets old school black metal. This release is obscure for more than one reason. All of his albums were released as unofficial demos, except the split eps, all put out on his own label. Das Tor was released as 300 numbered cassettes.
He do have an upcomming split w fellow swiss Nordlicht, that i guess will come out later this year.

DGM - Momentum

Band: DGM
Album: Momentum
Country: Italy

Release date: March 26, 2013
Label: Scarlet Records
Genre: Progressive Metal
Existed since: 1994

When I first started to listening to this album, I found it a bit boring and uniform. I didnt think they had raised the bar since their last effort, the excellent 'Frame', even though the first video, 'Reason' showed great promise. Now after 20+ listens, the album still grows on me. The musicianship by all members are flawless, the guitar/keyboard solos exciting, and Mark Basile vocal-techniques varied and really just adds that little extra to the music.
As guest musicians they have Russel Allen, vocalist of Symphony X, and Jørn Viggo Lofstad, guitarist in Pagan's Mind.
In music style they are still in the heavier side of progressive power metal, with some leanings towards late 80's/early 90's heavy metal, think Skid Row.

Highly Recommended.

Pomegranate Tiger - Entities

Band: Pomegranate
Album: Entities
Country: Canada

Release date: January 31, 2013
Label: Self-release
Genre: Djent, Progressive Metal, Instrumental
Existed since: 2008

The album starts with an intro that resembles Falla's A Fishermans Song, before entering the metal. Firstly its djenty, technical, clean jazz/metal that comes to mind, with the guitars leading the melodies. Some of the song are to find in the classical specter, and others are heavily influenced by 70's progressive rock.
A strong debut from the canadians, and i guess it wont be long until they get attached to a record label.

Long time favourite of mine, Intronaut, is out with a new album. In style i see them as Post-Metal meets Prog rock with a dash of jazz. They got a bit of a dirty sound, and the record need more than a few spins to get into, but once it gets familiar, there are no dull moments.

Highly Recommended.

Band: Persefone
Album: Spiritual Migration
Country: Andorra

Release date: March 29, 2013
Genre: Melodic Death Metal, Progressive Metal, Power Metal, Fusion
Existed since: 2001

Its my first meeting with this anodorrian band, and they serve us, with their fourth release, a diverse and complex album. Musically they are located in a fusion between progressive metal and modern death metal, with symphonic and folk elements. I dont think i wanna dwell into all the different bands/composers from whom they draw they influence, but even if u can recognize some obvious bands, like Rachmaninov and Gorod, i think they manage to create a sound of their own.

Highly Recommended

In Vain - Ænigma

Band: In Vain
Album: Ænigma
Country: Norway

Release date: March 8, 2013
Label: Indie Recordings
Genre: Progressive Death Metal
Existed since: 2003

Another contender for top albums of 2013 is norwegian death prog metallers In Vain, as with their second release come up w a truly great album, filled with strong songs. The languages on this album is in both norwegian n english. In the last song,  Floating On The Murmuring Tide, they use an instrument that i cant say i heard be used in death metal before, clarinet. It rly adds nice, sore sound to the melody.
The closest influences i can think of is black metal bands Borknagar, some Enslaved, n a pinch of norwegian punk-rock. Lars Are "Lazare" Nedland of Borknagar n Solefald is contributing on the album.

Highly Recommended.

Andreas Frigstad - vocals
Johnar Haaland - guitar

The first song on this ep, the dead sea, is just killer. I rly like their ambient texturing of the music against the hard parts. Second song is an ambient, quiet song, n 3. song is more technical death metal, w less melodies but still ambient background parts.

Ive never been much of a doom listener, but that may change after this record.
I think this is a rly laidback album w strong melodies mostly found in the guitars. The harsh vocal, the spoken words n the female choir adds nice texture to the music.

Artist: Steven Wilson
Album: The Raven That Refused To Sing (And Other Stories)
Country: UK

Release date: February 25, 2013
Label: Kscope
Genre: Progressive Rock
Existed since: 2003

I have a confession to make. I havent actually listened to any of his previous solo recordings. Even though ive seen they gotten rly good critics, i assumed it followed the same path in music as what he was doing in Porcupine Tree, which i found, after listening to some of their albums 20+ times, boring, simply put.
As ive been listening to this recording, i found out, this may not be the case...
On this album he draws strong influence from the 70's prog rock w leanings towards 70's jazz/rock fusion n mix it w his own strong sound n voice. I can hear a presence from the earliest Pink Floyd records n guitar soloing from the later Gilmour. There is also Van Der Graaf Generator n early Genesis, n even some The Tangent elements in the keyboard section of the music.
Expect strong musicianship n melodies. This will record will get loads of spin before i get tired of it...

Highly Recommended
